Mountains are our life

The Lienzer Bergbahnen are among the most important tourist facilities in East Tyrol and have undergone an exciting development – from a local ski area to a modern year-round mountain experience.

1950er

The story began in the 1950s with the development of Hochstein and Zettersfeld.

  • The first lift facilities were built to promote ski tourism.
  • The ski areas quickly developed into popular destinations for families and locals.
  • International ski races took place (FIS World Cup events, Olympic qualifiers, etc.)
1960er

In the 1960s, progress was unstoppable:

  • Further lift facilities were constructed
  • Investments were made in transport connections and multipurpose buildings
  • Slope expansions followed
  • Numerous World Cup races took place
1970er

The companies previously operating as Hochstein Ges.m.b.H. and Zettersfeldbahn AG now operated as Lienzer Bergbahnen AG.

  • Exceeding the 2 million mark in transported persons
  • Large advertising campaign in Austria and Germany with the rolling ski slope
  • Further lift facilities began operation
  • Additional slope construction took place
1980er

In the 1980s, not only were numerous improvements made to existing lift facilities, but also new constructions were undertaken:

  • Construction of Seinermandl double chairlift
  • Construction of snowmaking system
  • Construction of Zettersfeldbahn
  • Introduction of an electronic ticket network
1990er

The 1990s were marked by massive investments and major events:

  • Expansion of snowmaking systems including storage ponds
  • Construction of Bidner lift
  • Conversion of Steinermandlbahn to detachable quad
  • Construction of garages for slope equipment
  • Various Ski World Cup races
  • Numerous snowboard events, including world championships
2000er

The 2000s saw several major construction projects:

  • Expansion of snowmaking systems
  • Expansion of parking at Zettersfeld
  • Construction of Faschingalmbahn
  • Construction of Wartschenbrunn lift
  • Construction of Schlossbergbahn
  • Slope expansion
2010er

The 2010s marked the beginning of year-round operations:

  • Construction of the summer toboggan run “Osttirodler”
  • Expansion of the Lackenboden storage pond
  • Expansion of snowmaking system
2020er bis heute

In the 2020s, modernization and efficiency improvement are and remain in focus:

  • Upgrading of pumping stations
  • Expansion of the Triangel snowmaking system and practice lift
  • New lances system for the family run
  • Modernization of snowmakers
  • Use of snow depth measurements to increase efficiency
  • Construction of Bikepark Lienz
  • Construction of Family Park Lienz
  • Launch of the “Summit Sessions” event series
Vision

In order to remain one of the most attractive cable car operators in southern Austria, we will continue to focus on modernization and the expansion toward year-round operations. Construction of the new “Mittelhang” snowmaking system and various improvement measures is set to begin as early as summer 2026.
